Sarah Davis

Ms. Sarah B. (Neal) Davis, transitioned from labor to reward on Thursday, April 5, 2018.

Sarah Neal was born in Avera, Georgia on August 10, 1923 to James Luther Neal and Ruth Elizabeth Neal. She was the youngest of four children.

Sarah came to know the Lord at an early age and was baptized at Sand Valley AME Church in Louisville, Georgia. She was educated in Jefferson County Schools, graduating from Jefferson County High School (GA). Upon graduation from high school, she attended Paine College in Augusta. She later obtained a license and certification in Cosmetology. She married Edgar W. Davis and to this union they had 5 children. As a young couple, the two owned and operated a local grocery store in Augusta. They moved from Augusta to Raleigh in 1949 where they lovingly raised their 5 children and became active in the community. She worked as a practicum nurse at St. Agnes Hospital, Wake Memorial Hospital (now WakeMed) and Dorothea Dix Hospital until she retired in 1986. She also owned and operated Biltmore Hills Beauty Salon.

Sarah served as an active member of St. Paul AME Church for over 68 years in numerous capacities, including the Stewardess Board, Trustee Board, Director of the Young People’s Division (YPD), class leader, member of Addie G. Stroud Women’s Missionary Society, sang in numerous choirs and was a founding member of the New Generation Gospel Choir. She was honored as a ‘Living Legend’ by St. Paul in 2009.

In her Raleigh community, Sarah was active both civically and socially in numerous organizations and charities. She served as President of the Typical Twelve Club, Loyal Lady Ruler of the Golden Circle, Commandress of Daughters of Isis, Kabala Court No.67, Co-Founder of a local non-profit - Save Our Youth for Tomorrow, active member of the Beautician’s Chapter 27, and active member of her Delta Phi Theta Beautician Sorority. In every capacity, she sought to selflessly assist and improve the lives of those around her.

Sarah enjoyed gardening and walking, but her greatest joy was her family, who she cherished and loved immensely. Her smile and laughter were contagious, and she loved being around people. She will always be remembered as a loving sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend whose greatest passion was helping others.
