Yvonne Pope



Yvonne Hart Pope, 91, entered into eternal rest in peace on Wednesday March 14th, 2018. Yvonne was born on November 9, 1926 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Yvonne is the daughter of the late (William) Harvey and Mabel Hart.

Yvonne attended St. Monica’s Elementary and graduated from Washington High School in 1944. In 1948, Yvonne received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Saint Augustine’s College. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Gamma Rho Chapter.

Yvonne taught mathematics at Winston Salem Teacher’s College, which is now known as Winston Salem State University.

Yvonne met and married her high school sweetheart, Hal Worth Pope in 1950. From this union the two were blessed with seven sons. Over the next several years, Hal and Yvonne worked together to raise “dem Pope boyz” in a home filled with lots of love, fun and wonderful fond memories.

Yvonne was a devout Catholic for over 70 years and a faithful member of Sacred Heart Cathedral for over 40 years. Yvonne served on many auxiliaries at Cathedral. Yvonne and her sister, Barbara loved to sing hymns and both of them were founding members of the Sacred Heart Cathedral Spiritual Choir and served in the choir for over 25 years.

Yvonne had a profound love for helping people. She had a 30-year career as a Social Worker for Wake County Social Services. Locally, she was known throughout the southeast Raleigh community for making home visits assisting her clients.

In Yvonne’s global efforts, she gave monetarily to various agencies aiding children in Africa. In her years of retirement, Yvonne and Hal became lifetime learners and took many continuing education classes at North Carolina State University. Yvonne and Hal also shared a joy of traveling with Barbara (Yvonne’s sister) and Floyd (Hal’s brother). Also in her retirement, she spent her golden years surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; instilling the values in them that she spent a lifetime demonstrating.

Yvonne leaves to cherish her memory her sons: Paul (Toni), Chris (Cynthia), Nicholas (Lottie), Patrick (Maggie), and Carl (Sherra). She is preceded in death by two of her sons: Abdul Rashid Muhammad (Mark), and Alfred Pope, three daughter-in-law's, Patricia Pope, Linda Pope and Maria Pope, and two of her sisters Cloyce Massenburg and Gloria Lassiter. Yvonne also leaves to cherish her memories her grandchildren, great-grand children, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives. In her latter years, Yvonne and her sister Barbara lived together and truly enjoyed each other company. She will be dearly missed by her beloved sister and best friend, Barbara Corbett.

Funeral service 12:00 noon Wednesday March 21, 2018 at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Cathedral 715 Nazareth Street, Raleigh, NC 27606 preceded by an 11:00 AM visitation. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
