Timothy Scott Hovis Gobern is the son of Peggy (McGee) Hovis and the late James Hovis Snr. of Gaston County North Carolina. Tim was born on June 1, 1962 in Gaston Hospital, Gastonia, NC and passed unexpectedly with his husband Ivan at his side on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Rex UNC Hospital in Raleigh, NC.

Tim’s education began at North Gaston High and continued until he earned an Economics and Political Science undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill followed by an advanced Juris Doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law in 1988. He was a distinguished member of the North Carolina State Bar Association, Tenth Judicial District from 1988 until the time of his passing.

Mr. Hovis Gobern held the position of Legal Intern with the NC Dept. of Insurance in 1986, Legal Clerk for Justice Willis P Whichard of the NC Supreme Court in 1987 and Law Clerk with Spears, Barnes, Baker, Wainio, Whaley and Brown in Durham, NC in 1987-88 before his appointment as Litigation Associate for this firm from 1988-1991. Tim considered it a great honor to serve the citizens of North Carolina in the role of Senior Legislative Counsel at the North Carolina General Assembly from 1991 until his early retirement in 2016. Mr. Hovis Gobern was humbled with dozens of awards and major accomplishment recognitions for his role in helping set policy that has improved our quality of life in North Carolina.

Timothy Scott Hovis married Ivan Maurice Gobern in Raleigh, NC in May 2015, held a sacred ceremony in October of that same year. Mr. Hovis Gobern’s greatest passions included frequent contact with extraordinary life long friends, Fred Fletcher park with the family dog Diesel, anything Tar Heel nation, creative cooking and an active community life in the vibrant Five Point/Glenwood South neighborhood of downtown Raleigh. Tim was best known for his fierce humor and superior intellect. He led his home owner’s association as its president for more than 10 years.

He also leaves Alexis Gobern Jr.; Elizabeth Deshaies; Dr. Joseph & Janice Gobern; Isaac & Tanya Gobern; Louis & Michelle Gobern; 13 Gobern nieces and nephews; Jacquline & John Brown; Beatrice & Douglas Brown; Ruth McGee; Edythe and Randal McMillian; Liz Boulenger; Tracy Hall; Larry Leslie; Dr. Jesse White; Dr. Kent Davis & Dr. Carlos Garcia Vales; Denise HuntleyAdams, and so many others.
