Robert Gilliard, fondly called “Pete”, was born to the late Vernell Gilliard on June 6, 1934 in Raleigh, NC. He departed this earthly life on December 7, 2017 at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, NC. Pete was also preceded in death by a son, Jeffery; sisters, Vernell and Audrey; and brothers, Eddie and Ike.

Pete was united in holy matrimony to his wife Ida for 49 years. This union was blessed with two children: Beverly Gilbert (Tracy) and Ronald Gilliard. He was also the father of Angela Goode (Tony), Otis Lanier (Charlene), and Jeffery Lanier (deceased).

Pete received his early education in the Wake County Public School System. After high school he joined the United States Army where he received numerous awards, he was proudest of his two Bronze Star Medals, one in 1962 and one in 1969. He served a tour of duty in the Korean War, and several tours in Vietnam. Fond memories of Pete will live on in the lives and many hearts because of his kindness and loving spirit.

Pete leaves to cherish his memories: his children, Beverly Gilbert (Tracy), Ronald Gilliard, and Otis Lanier (Charlene), all of Raleigh, NC, Angela Goode (Tony) of Wake Forest, NC, Gary Gilliard (Felicia) of Hinesville, GA; sisters, Ann Gilliard of East Orange, NJ and Teresa Simmons of Raleigh, NC; brother, Perry Gilliard of East Orange, NJ; prior to departing this life he enjoyed 20 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral service at 1:00 PM Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the C.A. Haywood, Sr. Memorial Chapel preceded by a 12:30 PM visitation. Interment with full military honors will take place at Montlawn Memorial Park.
